The Black Presence in the Wine Industry

July 26, 2020

The wine industry is can be one of those things you either love or hate. I will admit that early on in my wine journey it wasn’t the most welcoming. It came off as pretentious and judgy (yes I meant to put judgy) to be honest. Oh look at that peasant girl drinking red wine from a white wine glass. Oh you like that wine? Silly girl, that isn’t a “real” wine. Would you look at how she’s holding that glass. Just shameful. Well, you get my drift. I struggled to connect with the flavors and sensations different wine created and as a result I wasn’t a fan of most wines I came across. I went on a trip to Napa Valley a few years ago for my friend’s birthday trip and of course we did a few wine tours. Being out in those vineyards was one of the most relaxing experiences I’ve had. The teacher in me enjoyed being able to learn about the process of making wine and the science behind the pairings. It was the first time I was actually enjoying different types of wine. Last year I took a few trips to Fredericksburg, TX where I was able to explore the local wine scene. I met a sommelier ironically named Brandi at one of the vineyards. She was warm, inviting, extremely knowledgeable and kept my attention the entire time. It sparked a desire in me to learn more. I love how wine takes you on a journey through History, Geography and Science. Returning home I started doing some research and found wine enthusiasts and professionals that look like me. There is a whole culture out there that I had previously not been exposed to. They completely changed my mind about the wine industry. As a teacher and food & drink enthusiast I hope to be able to bridge the gap between the urban millennial group and the wine industry by curating fun and relatable experiences. Let’s take the pressure off and learn in a fun way. I have started my level 1 WSET training and I’m already learning so much. I can’t wait to share this journey with you all. There are some individuals that I’ve come across along the way that keep me inspired. Check them out as well.
